Film review – Cassandra’s Dream

In this movie, two brothers in England scrape together some money to buy a sail boat. The one brother (Colin Farrell) gets his money from gambling and the other brother (Ewan McGregor) is slightly more responsible and has been setting aside money for a business venture with some friends from the US. Colin gets in too deep into the gambling and after a couple of wins, ends up getting in the red for 90K. Ewan tries to help him out by borrowing money from their dad’s restaurant – which isn’t doing well in the first place.

Their rich uncle comes to visit their mother for her birthday and they ask him to help them out. In return, he asks them to help him out – they can get the money they need if they’ll kill a guy who’s going to witness against the rich uncle in the US. They botch the job the first time, but follow through with it. Then Colin begins to freak out about what they’ve done and gets weird. The drugs and alcohol don’t help his condition and he threatens to go to the police. The uncle and Ewan have to figure out what to do. The only thing they can think of is to kill Colin and save themselves. Ewan and Colin take a boat trip and things don’t go as planned. I’ll leave it at that.

Interesting film. I’m not a huge Woody Allen fan and this has lots of woody-isms in it. It’s an enjoyable film though and I was actually entertained most of the time. Though, if I never see Colin Farrell play a suicidal nutjob again, I’ll be happy.
