The Virginity Hit – A Dialogue
Allen: You are too harsh, ma’am. Come on, so there’s nothing in the film that you found remotely entertaining? You didn’t think that the camaraderie between the group of friends was realistic?
Or the fact that all the young actors did well despite being no names? What about the chase scene where Nicole’s father catches the guys in his house and forces them to jump off the roof? Or the part where Matt serenades the audience with his sweet guitar playing skills? I’ll give you the fact that this movie is silly and outlandish at times, but I think there’s enough here to say that one wouldn’t waste their time watching it.
Brandi: Perhaps the camaraderie was fairly realistic, but it definitely wasn’t entertaining. Matt and Zack’s two other friends might as well have not been there, as they had no personalities or purpose. Even Matt and Zack had no real traits beyond Matt’s desire to get laid and Zack’s voyeurism. If that is realistic of a teenage boy’s experience…well, there’s a reason why movie characters tend to be wittier than real people. The acting was okay, though as I said I’m not clamoring to see any of the core cast again. And without giving away how things end up for Matt on his quest, I have to say that nothing that happens in the third act of this film feels earned, at all.
Allen: The fact that you feel nothing was earned at the end is due to the film not knowing what kind of tone it was going for, which is definitely a script problem. By all definitions, this movie is not good, but I can’t say that I hated it. This is a movie about teenage boys, they’re supposed to be dumb and hormonal and silly. Yes, some of the guys in the group had no personalities whatsoever, but I knew a bunch of kids back in the day that didn’t know who they were at that age. Heck, I know a bunch of people who don’t know who they are at my current age!
At the end of the day, I think this movie caught me on a good day. If I was having a bad day when I watched this, maybe I would have felt differently.
Brandi: Excuses, excuses. Just because there are people in real life who are boring doesn’t mean I should have to tolerate poorly written film characters!
So, the film caught you on a good day, but I’m not sure any mood could have saved it for me.
Allen: Hey, don’t hate on the boring people, they need some film recognition too!
Brandi: I’ll wrap this review with a very teenage response: whatever.
Final Grades:
Brandi: D+
Allen’s reasonable brain: C+
Allen’s sympathetic heart: B-
