Top Horror Films – #15 – Shaun of the Dead

Shaun of the Dead
2004; directed by Edgar Wright; written by Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg

There is something uniquely satisfying about a film that successfully blends horror and comedy, and Shaun of the Dead is certainly the film that has best exemplified this feat in the last decade. I watched it again very recently, and was struck by how much time and care it takes to set up the world of the characters and their relationships, before the zombie element becomes the focus of the plot. This approach allows both the laughs and the tension to feel truly earned, even in the most out-there moments. With great performances, effects, editing, and music, there is little to criticize in this extraordinarily fun film.

Brandi is one of those people who worries about kids these days not appreciating black and white films. She also admires great moments of subtlety, since she has no idea how to be subtle herself.
